Abstract

3D model of a pipe bowl that was carved from wood which is part of the Uetz collection. This pipe bowl is carved from wood and contains mother-of-pearl inlays and was made in the early 19th century. The mother-of-pearl inlays are a handicraft in which small pieces of mother-of-pearl – usually obtained from sea pearl oysters – are precisely inserted into wood. Finally, the surface is polished.

Karl Uetz (1914–1998) was a private collector and owner of a large mollusc collection. In addition to thousands of snail and mussel shells, the collection also contains approximately 200 art and everyday objects as well as ethnographic objects. The collection was purchased by the NHM in 1974 and digitised in 2025.
