Abstract

3D scan of a model of the giant clam (Tridacna gigas). These mollusks can form shells up to 1.4 meters in length and their bodies can weight over 250 kilograms. They live as harmless filter feeders in coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific and feed on microorganisms. In addition, giant clams harbour living algae, so called Zooxanthellae. These symbionts live in the colourful mantle of the clam and supply them with sugar and starch.
